The palace that replaced Topkapı in 1856 blends European baroque with Ottoman craft across 285 rooms. Its 4.5-tonne chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, lights the ceremonial hall.
Built in 1664 to fund the mosque next door, it packs in spices, Turkish delight, dried fruit and teas. Far more compact than the Grand Bazaar, it takes about an hour.
Its fourteenth-century mosaics and frescoes rank among the best preserved in all Byzantine art. Sitting out in the Edirnekapı district, it escapes the crowds of the old centre.
